CARE AND FEEDING INSTRUCTION FOR YOUR NEW TEACUP TINY TOY PUPPY
Until your puppy reaches 4.5 to 5 months old, please follow these rules as best as you can. As you become used to each other and feel secure in caring for your puppy, then you may choose to cut one or more soft servings of food, as long as your puppy has gained weight.
CHILDREN- The fastest way to make a puppy sick and end up in a health crisis is to allow a child to carry the puppy around. Imagine being on a continuous roller coaster and how sick you would become. Instruct the child to SIT with the puppy and enforce this rule. Remember puppies do not stay puppies and by the time your puppy is 5 months old, you can relax a bit off of these strict instructions.
WARMTH- Our puppies are tiny and calorie intake versus calories burned is extremely important. Shivering burns calories and a puppy shivering all night can lead to loss of calories and low blood sugar. A HEATING PAD is needed, preferably a canine heating pad as they do not get too hot.Even of your home is 72 degrees your puppy needs a heating pad and the option to get off of the pad. I keep my puppy room at 78 degrees so I do not need to use heating pad unless a puppy is ill. If using a human heating pad, set on low, and it needs to be wrapped in a towel as well as have a cord wrap on any cord accessible by the puppy. To order a safer pet heat pad, go to your Petshops or order from Revival Animals at www.revivalanimals.com. NEVER FORCE HEAT UNLESS YOU HAVE PROOF OF LOW BODY TEMP and then proceed with a Veterinarian's advice. A puppy should be able to walk off the heat pad
SHIVERING FROM COLD BURNS CALORIES. It is important puppy does not shiver during the night. As I mentioned I keep my puppy room at a minimum of 78 degrees. Most people do not keep their home this warm,' so a heating pad is needed until a puppy is around 6 months old. Even in summer a home may be too cool due to air conditions.
FIREPLACES- Never keep a puppy near a fireplace as fumes can kill them.
LOW BLOOD SUGAR RARE IN MY PUPS. My puppies rarely get low blood sugar as I feed my puppies a lot, cottage cheese three times a day, plus I soak dry food twice aday, plus they have dry food available at all times. I watch the activity level so they do not burn too many calories. They freely run and play in a limited space of a playpen that is 36 inches by 20 inches. I house two puppies to a crib for sanitary reasons. They have toys, mirrors, and each other, but you will have ONE puppy and need to prevent loneliness.
ENTERTAINMENT- LONELINESS-. My puppies have each other plus toys. I clean puppies and toys often as I have mild OCD and am a perfectionist, which works well with puppies as they need excellent care . Cleanliness is vital to optimal To help offset depression due to a change in environment and loneliness for siblings, please use stuffed animals, a mirror , and if you are gone more then a few hours at a time, use your television or at least a radio. Your puppy playpen can be set near the TV and keep a channel on for human voice. If you are gone longer then a few hours then please male sure your puppy eats before you go, that the puppy is warm, and has company in toys and radio or TV.
ACTIVITY needs to be kept limited in the first month, especially the first two weeks!
Puppy should spend the majority of the first two weeks in a playpen, or on your lap while you sit. Playpens should be smaller size around 36 x 24 inches which can move thru doorways. New puppies should not be allowed to run freely through the house for longer then 30 minutes at a time in the beginning week or two. Use 30 minute run time and then a two hours rest in playpen. Each week that passes you can extend the running around period and lessed time in the playpen, so that by 5 months your puppy can be given the choice to choose to run around or rest. Make sure puppy eats though regardless of age
EATING- Just like a young human toddler busy in play, can forget to eat, so can a puppy forget to eat. While everyone adjusts, make sure your puppy is given an inch of NUTRICAL first thing in the morning, again in the afternoon and also at night. Make sure the puppy takes it. Put an inch on your finger and swipe it on her inside cheek. If any falls off then get it back of your finger and put the gel back in her mouth. I have never ever seen a puppy choke on Nutrical. It melts in the mouth and many pups are willing to eat it.
PUPPIES LOVE COTTAGE CHEESE.I go through gallons of this stuff!! Between my dogs and puppies I have a huge grocery bill in the human grocery store. Human grade foods like Gerber baby meatsticks are a good choice for a finiky puppy. Back to the cottage cheese... I use full fat cottage cheese and I rinse of the goop off in a strainer to get off the preservatives. If you can find organic cottage cheese then the straining is not needed. I warm up the curds 15 seconds in the microwave and serve two times a day.
GOATSMILK doesn't have to be given if your puppy eats full fat cottage cheese three
times aday. If you prefer goatsmilk over cottage cheese then give three times a day the first week. You can rteduce to two times per day of wither the goatsmilk or cottage cheese in the second week. If you notice the puppy is not eating dry food then keep up the cottage cheese or goatsmilk three tinmes aday PLUS Nutrical 3 times aday too. Always warm up the milk or cottage cheese. I can't imagine giving cold milk to a puppy, as it could chill the tiny pups core body temperature, and in the winter, in a cool home that could lead to trouble.
EUKANUBA PUPPY DRY FOOD - Keep the bowl filled at all times. I have seen two puppies choke to death in the last 10 years and I couldn't save them, so I use the teensiest knibble I can find. Eukanuba is expensive at $40 a 13 lb bag, but I am too afraid to use any larger sized knibble for my puppies until they are over 4 months of age. At four months of age I use a mix of Eukanuba and Iams mixed. In adults I use Lifes Abundance, Orijin and Blue
BOTTLED WATER available at all times. If you have an extra teensy teacup then add 2 cc of karo syrup to 4 ounces of the water ONLY AT NIGHT.Regular bottled water daytime
NEVER EVER EVER FEED ANY CANNED FOOD TO PUPPIES UNDER 6 MONTHS. THIS IS THE NUMBER ONE CAUSE OF SICKNESS IN PUPPIES IN MY OPINION. I HAVE MUCH EXPERIENCE SO TAKE MY WORD> MANY TIMES I'V SEEN SICKNESS AND EVERY TIME TRACED IT TO CANNED FOOD, EVEN ORGANIC CANNED.
Of course the canning process kills bacteria, but the canning process does not get rid of ENDOTOXINS which are the POOP made by the bacteria in the old and diseased animal meat allowed to be used in the making of canned dog food. Endotoxins, which are considered to be a toxin kept "within" the bacterial cell and released only after destruction of the bacterial cell wall. Meat used by dog food companies can be ftrom sickly and diseased animals. The byproduct remains in the food, while bacteria is killed with the canning process. Puppies immune systems become stronger after 6 months and you can use an organic canned food if you feel you need to use canned food at all. I steer away from it except in adults sometimes and then only organic types. I cook for my dogs and also use KEEN which is organic freeze dried food from THE HAPPY KITCHEN .
